One of the striking characteristic features of Japanese traditional sensitivity is sensing something that is not around - loss, distance, lack, something hidden or out of sight, or incompleteness. In appreciating beauty, imagination plays a significant role.

The reality of a room, for instance, was to be found in the vacant space enclosed by the roof and the walls, not in the roof and walls themselves.
